Garnet is the birthstone for January, and you may know that garnets are typically a dark red colour.
Recently we received this comment:
“Garnet is my birthstone but I have to say I’m not keen. I’d much rather have greens”
If you feel the same way, we had excellent news, because garnets actually exist in other colours too. Demantoid garnets are the rarest and most highly prized of all garnets and are a stunning green colour.
Here comes the science bit: demantoid garnets have a very high refractive index and dispersion giving them exceptional brilliance and fire. Because of his they were a great favourite of the Victorians who often used them in the gem set insects and animals which were so popular at he time.
We LOVE this Victorian snake pendant.
One of rarest coloured gemstones there is, large stones of over 3 carats are particularly rare.
Demantoid garnets were found in Russia in the mid 19th Century, and were a favourite of Carl Faberge for highlighting his creations.
Demantoid garnets are said to bring prosperity and success, so they are perfect for a talisman.
